So you haven’t blogged in a few days…

Maury Ballstein: What do we do when we fall off the horse?

Derek Zoolander: [thoughtfully looking up and mouthing the words silently] … fall off the horse…

Maury Ballstein: [looking to supply finish] … we… get back on!

Derek Zoolander: Sorry, Maury. I’m not a gymnast.
So you’ve taken a few days off from blogging…maybe it’s a personal blog, maybe it’s a company blog. Now you are thinking about the blogs you read and how much content they are putting out regularly. You’re thinking:

“How am I going to blog everyday?
I can’t write as much as Chris Brogan does.
How is it possible to blog everyday?
Do I even have that much to say?”

I’ve been there.  I think about it all the time when I get wrapped up in the day-to-day.  I worry about my readership and how much quality content and value I’m really putting out there.  Maybe you’ve been there, maybe you haven’t.  When you get to that point I would recommend thinking about what your long term goals are and why you blog in the first place?  After you do that, decide if it’s worth making yourself crazy trying to keep up with blogging everyday.  Finally cut yourself some slack.  The truth is that the majority of blogs go unread and rarely updated.  A very slim percentage of bloggers make money from blogging.  So take it easy and just try to contribute whatever value you can.  This is a group effort.

  • I battle with this all the time while trying to write for so many different blogs. I really slacked off for a while in 2009 when I was busy writing three books in under six months. I still had some good content, but I got a little blogged down. I always try to remember that quality counts, and if I just don't have anything interesting, I just shut up and keep my thoughts to myself. :-)

Great point Mark. It's tough because when you see the great blogs, like Seth Godin and Chris Brogan as well as tons of others, they are putting out great content day after day. I'm amazed how anyone can think like that day and and out. I guess it's just a process of training yourself to think about blogging all the time, writing down ideas etc.

I love your advice in this though because sometimes you gotta just cut yourself some slack and truthfully if you're not "feeling it", you might as well save it for another day when you are.
