HTML5, web innovation and those poor technologically challenged Internet Explorer users

I just read this article about HTML 5:

http://gizmodo.com/5461711/giz-explains-why-html5-isnt-going-to-save-the-internet?skyline=true&s=i

The one thing that stuck out at me wasn't how great this technology is.  It wasn't how new technologies improve our web experiences.  And it wasn't a sense of anger at Apple for not including Flash on their various mobile device, though that fact comes up constantly in this article.

No, what I am left with after reading this is that all those people out there who think that the blue "E" on their desktop is the internet are sadly uninformed and it's ruining it for the rest of us.  So go out, tell you friends and family to stop using Internet Explorer.  Stop dragging 5-10 years behind.  Embrace advancements in technology.  It's the same people who right now are using Office 2003 and Windows XP and think why change, this works "just fine?"

Maybe it's the early adopter in me.  Maybe it's the gadget-obsession.  Maybe it's just that I'm a HUGE nerd.  But I can't stand that Internet Explorer in all it's futility and all it's aversion to full standards compliance is STILL the most used browser on the market.  I don't really blame people, because most really don't know any better.  So it's you job to spread the word.  With your help, maybe we can get a better web experience!

HAHA. I feel the same way. There are more than enough reasons, made publicly available, to NOT use Internet Explorer. Sadly some things are still made for Internet Explorer rather than with the rest of the web in mind. I still have to use Internet Explorer for some intranet related tasks, because it's Sharepoint and I cringe everytime I open it. I'm just still amazed at it's overall dominance...especially now that Chrome is out! I LOVE Google Chrome, it's so much faster and lightweight .

The one thing that makes me feel better is all the stories of sites ceasing to support Internet Explorer, like when YouTube stopped supporting IE6. It's the small things that keep me going.
  • There is enough information to tell people just how badly they compromise their security by using Explorer to keep a person reading for months. Why don't they get it? I guess it is perhaps because Microsoft never makes a mistake and they invented computing.

I use Google Chrome. When I have to open Internet Explorer I cringe every time. The only thing I use it for is to see how badly it jacks up css and to make sure my code was spot on in dealing with Explorer's deficiencies.

It is like plaid leisure suits. Some people still they they are "in", too.
